ANATOLY VASILIEVICH BAZHENOV

(1920-1999)

Hero of the Soviet Union

Anatoly Vasilyevich Bazhenov was born on the 4th of June, 1920 in the village of Duroy, Nerchinnsko-Zavodsky district of the Trans-Baikal region (now – Priargunsky region of the Trans-Baikal Territory) in a Russian peasant family. He graduated from elementary school, worked as a combine driver.

He had been in the Red Army since 1942, had been through battles of the Great Patriotic War since 1942 and had been the member of the CPSU (b) since 1944.

Sergeant Anatoly Bazhenov, the assistant commander of a foot reconnaissance platoon of the 270th Guards Rifle Regiment (89th Guards Rifle Division, 37th Army, Steppe Front) Guard on the 28th of September, 1943 with a group of foot reconnaissance officers under the heavy fire of enemies, he was one of the first to cross the Dnepr River in the area of the village of Keleberda, Kremenchung district, Poltava region of Ukraine.

The reconnaissance group had occupied a foothold on the right bank of the Dnepr and repelled six counterattacks by superior enemy forces for two days and became victorious.

By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of the 20th of December, 1943 for the exemplary fulfillment of combat missions of the command on the front of the front of the struggle against the German invaders and the courage and heroism of the guards were shown at the same time, the Sergeant Anatoly Vasilyevich Bazhenov was awarded with the title of Hero of the Soviet Union with award of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal (No. 1455).

The guard senior sergeant A.V. Bazhenov was demobilized. He lived in the village of Pirevichi, Zhlobin district, Gomel region, Belarus. He had been working at a state farm until the retirement. In recent years he had lived in Gomel. Died on the 15th of October, 1999.
