ALEXANDER ILYICH LIZYUKOV

1900 – 1942

The hero of the USSR

Alexander Ilyich Lizyukov was born in Gomel. In the Red Army since 1919. Member of the Civil War. Graduated from the Military Automobile Armored School (1923), the Military Academy named after M.V. Frunze (1927). Since 1940 he has been a teacher at the Military Academy of Mechanization and Motorization of the Red Army. In June 1941 - Colonel.

During the Smolensk Battle in 1941, Colonel Alexander Ilyich Lizyukov distinguished himself in the battles near the town of Borisov and at the Solovievskaya crossing across the river. Dnieper, for which on 5 August 1941 he was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union. The outcome of the Smolensk confrontation, even the timing of the retreat of Soviet troops, then decided the fate of Moscow. Rokossovsky K.K., appointed commander of the mobile group at the Smolensk line, brilliantly characterized Lizyukov: "Alexander Ilyich's courage was boundless, the ability to maneuver with small forces was at a height." Together with Lizyukov, his 16-year-old son Yuri took part in the defense of the crossing, who was awarded the medal "For Courage".

During the war, deputy commander of the 36th tank division of the 17th mechanized corps (from July 1941), commander of the 1st Moscow motorized rifle division (from September 1941 - 1st Guards) (August - November 1941), then deputy commander of the 20th army, commander of the 2nd Guards, rifle corps, 2nd tank corps. In June-July 1942, commander of the 5th Panzer Army. He took part in the battle near Moscow, in battles in the Voronezh direction.

Killed in battle on 25 July near the village of Medvezhye, Voronezh Region.

He was awarded 2 Orders of Lenin.

The Saratov Higher Command and Engineering School was named after Major General Lizyukov. In the city of Gomel, a street is named after the Lizyukov brothers, a monument is erected in honor of the Lizyukov brothers. In the summer of 2009, in the Voronezh region, the first Russian registered combine "KZS-1218" - "Commander Lizyukov" was launched for harvesting.
