Belarusian biometric data collection system fully functional

MINSK, 7 September (BelTA) – As of 1 September 2021 Belarusians can apply for new personal identification documents – identification cards (ID cards), which are used inside the country, and biometric passports, which are necessary for foreign travels, BelTA learned from the Telegram channel of the Press Secretary of the Belarusian Internal Affairs Ministry Olga Chemodanova.
According to the source, over 300 citizens applied for ID cards and 270 citizens applied for biometric passports on the very first day. About 200 foreigners applied for biometric residence permits. These numbers only increased later on. Over 3,000 applications have been filed so far. Applications for the new documents have also been filed with Belarusian diplomatic missions and consular institutions abroad.
According to the Citizenship and Migration Department of the Belarusian Internal Affairs Ministry, citizens had no serious complaints about the system used to collect biometric data.
According to Aleksandr Derikolenko, Head of the Passports and Foreign Travels Department of the Citizenship and Migration Department of the Belarusian Internal Affairs Ministry, specialists initially had a handful of problems relating to hardware and software tuning. He pointed out that such problems normally happen during the deployment of such complicated information systems. All the errors were promptly fixed and did not affect the operation of citizenship and migration offices.
